Field-Changeable Constant Power/Constant Temperature Technology Is Here

If you always know all the actual field and process conditions into which your flow meters are installed, read no further. On the other hand, if you’ve ever been surprised to learn that all was not known or not as the process design engineer expected, then keep reading.

FCI Is Where The HART Is

Instrumentation continues to evolve from a simple measuring device, reporting only one process parameter, into smart instruments providing users with data on multiple process parameters, the instrument’s health and fault diagnosis, and asset management over a digital communications bus.

Selecting Instrumentation For Functional Safety (SIL) Applications

Over the past couple of decades, the process industries have seen many changes when it comes to the design and implementation of emergency shutdown/safety systems.  The introduction of several international and regional standards requires a more rigorous approach to the overall safety lifecycle of a system compared to the use of best engineering design practices of the past.  As a result, a broader and significant increase in the implementation of these standards has been noted within the industry.

Selecting Flow Meters For Large Line Sizes, Ducts

To obtain good flow measurement accuracy and repeatability in large line sizes, a single point flow sensor will most likely not provide an effective solution. This is because, in most cases, large line sizes do not have a sufficient straight run available and may have elbows, blockages, dampers, valves, etc. close to the desired flow sensor location. This results in the desired sensor location being susceptible to swirl and inconsistent, skewed or otherwise distorted flow profiles. Flow rates can be significantly different in different locations across the pipe or duct.

So, what is the solution? One best-practices solution is the use of thermal flow meters in multipoint configuration.

How Constant Power Technology Excels in Moist Gas Applications

For almost 25 years, FCI’s constant power thermal flow meter technology has been the defacto, proven solution for moist gas applications such as WWT digester gas and other biogas.  FCI’s constant power technology provides two key differences when compared to constant ΔT technology:  1) constant power is measuring a change in temperature which is slower to change and provides a natural dampening effect for moisture, and 2) the temperature difference at the sensors is 30°C to 50°C which creates a better drying effect on the sensors...  Additionally, for moist, dirty gas applications, FCI flow elements provide open, equal mass sensors that will better shed the moisture and are most accessible for occasional cleaning (Figure 1).
